Introducing the Iwate Office of Rivers and National Highways

The office staff perform different duties according to their divisions.

The general affairs and accounting divisions
The general affairs and accounting divisions
These divisions are the windows open to all employees of the office. They are responsible for employee health, administer the budget, look after the property of the office and conclude contracts for construction work.
The first and second site divisions and the Ichinoseki flood retarding basin site branch office
The first and second site divisions and the Ichinoseki flood retarding basin site branch office
These divisions and this branch negotiate with landowners when land is needed to build embankments, flood retarding basins, roads or other facilities.
The first, second and third engineering works divisions
The first, second and third engineering works divisions
These divisions plan entire construction projects, taking into consideration the needs for the work and appropriate, economical methods of construction, and build embankments, flood retarding basins and roads. They also construct Riverside Plazas for the enjoyment of people.

In order to create lively, safe, and disaster-free towns, these divisions make plans for the future development of rivers and roads, and announce flood forecasts.
The river control division and the river usage and coordination division
The river control division and the river usage and coordination division
This division controls the embankments and sluice gates that protect people's lives from floods, and grants permission for use of riverbeds. It also examines the quality of river water to ensure that river water is safe to use.

To ensure the safe and convenient use of national highways, these divisions repair roads, cut grass and make plans to minimize the risk of disasters on the roads. They also issue permits for the passage of trailer trucks and other special vehicles, and provide a variety of information about the roads.
The traffic facilitation division
The traffic facilitation division

To prevent traffic accidents, this division paints road markings, sets up road signs and lights, builds underground passes and repairs intersections so that vehicles can proceed smoothly. It also builds groadway stationsh in cooperation with relevant municipalities.

The machinery division

This division maintains snowplows and machines to clean the national highways and builds sluice gates and pumps for rivers.
The electrical communication division
The electrical communication division
Using electrical communication technology, this division works on and manages a variety of equipment and instruments used for managing rivers and roads.
Morioka, Mizusawa and Ichinoseki branch offices
Morioka, Mizusawa and Ichinoseki branch offices

These branch offices mainly patrol the KitakamiRiver and supervise construction works on embankments and flood retarding basins.
When a flood occurs, they patrol day or night in an effort to minimize damage.

Morioka, Ninohe, Mizusawa, Kitakami and Morioka-nishi national highway maintenance branch offices
Morioka, Ninohe, Mizusawa, Kitakami and Morioka-nishi national highway maintenance branch offices
These offices mainly patrol national highways and supervise construction work on national highways. When a disaster occurs, they immediately control traffic. In winter they undertake snow removal work.
