Flood Disaster Prevention Project Integrated with Land-Utilization

Because Nihonmatsu and Adachi area had no levee, both areas were severely affected by floodwater in August 1998; for example, National Route 4 was covered with floodwater and temporarily closed.

If we use the conventional approach (construction of continuous levees) in these areas, it will be a costly solution, and furthermore it will take long time to see the effect, because of the distance between the sections, the repair work status of the tributary rivers, and the geographic features of the land.

For that reason, we have been hosting “the Nihonmatsu-Adachi area river maintenance study committee” among the river and environment experts, local representatives, and government offices concerned, and exchanging opinions with local residents. It is for making a river maintenance program, especially the method that can produce the effect earlier, such as the method of ring levees, moving onto the elevated land, etc.
